Mullewa’s Youth Centre will remain open for at least another two years after the State Government extended its funding.

The centre, which serves as a hub for activities and programs in the area, has had a one-year extension to its current funding.

It means the facility will run until at least June 30, 2026.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said the facility was an important service for the community.

“Many young people in the region visit the centre as an after-hours drop-in service as it provides a safe and welcoming environment,” he said.

“Thanks to this funding, young people are guaranteed access to a variety of engaging programs and activities, as well as the continuation of the Mullewa Youth Service.

“On behalf of the city, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Department of Communities for continuing to fund both the centre’s staffing and activities during the school breaks.”

The centre offers activities as well as school holiday programs which enable young people in the community to learn new skills.

According to deputy mayor Natasha Colliver, the final funding amount was not yet known but she expected it to be similar to the $225,000 given previously over a two-year period.

The centre, which is open three days a week, offers young people a chance to try out sports and art projects in a fun and safe environment.

There are more activities put on in the school holidays, including discos, movie nights and artist workshops.

Organisations including Bike Rescue and the Champion Ways Boxing program also work with the centre on programs at different times.

Excursions to Geraldton are also organised by the centre as part of horizon-broadening experiences.

“Funding projects such as the activities delivered at the Mullewa Youth Centre ensures we provide opportunity to positively engage with young people, keep them safe, and assist them to develop new skills,” Agricultural Region MLC Sandra Carr said.

“I commend the City of Greater Geraldton’s commitment to delivering this services for Mullewa‘s young community members.”
