Book in for Waroona pools and courts

After two months of being closed, recreation centres around WA have been given the green light to reopen.

Waroona Recreation and Aquatic Centre opened yesterday for the first time since COVID-19 restrictions forced it to shut.

Centre manager Daniel Cools said he was delighted to welcome back the centre’s regulars as well as new faces who were looking to keep fit and healthy.

“We are expecting a really high demand,” Mr Cools said. “We have set up a booking system to ensure we share the time around amongst the community.”

Under the new State Government laws, the centre will be allowed to have only 20 people in its sports stadium at any one time.

The indoor pool is allowed to open, however the gym will remain closed.

“We will need to hold off on the gym reopening for now and wait for the next stage of the restrictions to be announced,” he said.

During the centre’s closure, Mr Cools took it upon himself to offer free online workout videos to the Waroona community.

“It was great to be able to help people stay fit and healthy during isolation,” he said.

The centre has now started modified group fitness sessions. People can also use the basketball, netball, squash, tennis and badminton facilities.

Waroona shire president Mike Walmsley said it was great to see the centre back open.

“It has definitely been missed by the Waroona community,” he said.
