Community urged to play part in 2023 Clean Up Australia Day event on the Leschenault Estuary in Australind

Residents of Australind and beyond are being encouraged to make an impact in reducing the amount of waste in the natural environment. Every year, volunteers across the country gather to remove rubbish from beaches, parks, forests and everything in between for Clean Up Australia Day. Clean Up Australia chair Pip Kiernan said it was clear Australians were concerned about the environment, but often felt frustrated and unsure how to make an impact. “Clean Up Australia Day is a great opportunity to work together and take practical action,” she said. Despite moves towards reducing waste in recent year, it is still a significant problem. The organisation estimates about 130,000 tonnes of plastic alone ends up in Australian waterways and oceans each year For those wanting to make a difference locally, the Leschenault Catchment Council will be hosting a Clean Up Australia Day event on the banks of the Leschenault Estuary to mark the event’s 33rd year. The clean-up will start at 9am and run through to 11am on Sunday March 5, with participants to meet at the Christina Street Reserve. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, with those seeking to participate asked to bring a hat and a water bottle and wear protective clothing and enclosed shoes.
