Harvey’s radio station wins Oz gong

The South West is home to a broadcasting national winner, with Harvey Community Radio taking out the top spot in a recent awards ceremony.

The station won the Best Community Engagement Award in Australia for its committent to bringing people together and celebrating multiculturalism and diversity.

The radio group — which is run entirely by volunteers — initiated NAIDOC Week celebrations and the Italian Sagra Sausage Festival. The volunteers also help to run many other events in the community.

Both the NAIDOC and Sagra events attract people from all over the South West and Perth regions.

They are unique celebrations which aim to showcase the town’s multicultural population.

Dedicated volunteer Janine Quicke said she was delighted to win the award.

She also said 96.5fm also received Excellence in Indigenous Engagement, Multicultural Engagement and Training.

Harvey Community Radio is a previous two-time winner of the Excellence in Training Award.

The station supports young people through school programs and workplace learning initiatives.

“Having a platform like ours gives the town access to local news and information,” Ms Quicke said.

“It also supports local musicians and gives them a place to break into the industry.”

The station with the catchphrase “It’s your town talking” is set to undergo a transformation as part of the new town centre and future community hub project.
