Last night Albemarle held the first of five job information sessions in Bunbury as part of the company’s recruitment drive.

The sessions are designed to inform the community about vacancies and upcoming opportunities available at the Kemerton Lithium Project under construction.

Further sessions will be held in Collie on August 14, Leschenault on August 19, Brunswick on August 20 and Harvey on August 21.

An Albemarle spokesman said the company was seeking staff to fill not only production positions, but administrative and maintenance roles as well.

“The Kemerton operation will host a workforce typical of a chemical manufacturing facility with plant operators, control room staff, laboratory staff, administrators and maintenance staff with first production planned for 2021,” he said.

“Members of the South West community are now invited to come along at the advertised times and locations of the local job information sessions to learn more about the employment and career opportunities.

“Construction personnel will be hired through contractors and their agencies some of who will also be represented at these upcoming sessions.”

The global lithium giant has been criticised by workers unions for not giving enough opportunities to people living in the South West.

These criticisms culminated in a protest outside the lithium refinery construction site last month.

Albemarle refuted the claims, saying more than 70 per cent of their current operational workforce was employed from the region.
