Shire of Harvey to investigate potential of enclosed dog park within council following community feedback

A South West council will look into providing a park option for residents’ four-legged pals following community feedback.
The Shire of Harvey currently does not have an enclosed dog park.
However, the council is now looking at how to make that change.
Deputy Shire president Michelle Campbell successfully moved an elected member motion at the last meeting to have chief executive Annie Riordan investigate the issue and report back to council at the end of this month.
She described the decision as a “pretty easy one for councillors”.
“We’ve received a lot of communication through our advisory groups, community notice boards and also a deputation that there’s a perception that we need an enclosed dog park within the Shire, somewhere,” she said.
The motion was carried unanimously after Ms Riordan confirmed a report could be turned around in the provided month-long timespan following a query from Cr Robyn Coleman.
There are currently 10 dog exercise areas within the Shire of Harvey, including the main cricket oval at Leschenault Recreation Park, Harvey’s Meriden Park and Binningup Oval.
However, none of the areas are fully enclosed. As it stands, the dog exercise area in Roelands is the railway reserve between Government Road and South Western Highway.
Any selection by council of a suitable site for an enclosed dog park would be followed by community consultation.
The report will come to council on June 27.
