As a teacher and proud Australian, I was utterly disgusted by reports of people booing and heckling the welcome to country during this year’s Anzac Day services. Let me be clear: this behaviour is not only shameful — it’s unAustralian. Before I go any further, let’s clear up a common misconception: the welcome to country is not about being “welcomed to Australia”. It is not a political stunt, nor is it a recent invention. It is a ritual or formal ceremony performed by a recognised elder of the local Aboriginal clan or language group — the traditional custodians of the land — to acknowledge the significance of that land and the people who have lived in relationship with it for tens of thousands of years. The word “country” in this context means far more than geography. It speaks to culture, language, law, kinship, identity, and spirituality. When we are welcomed to country, we are being invited to share space respectfully — to walk gently and recognise that we are part of something much older and deeper than ourselves. As an immigrant to Australia, I understand what it means to feel a disconnect at times — to wonder where you fit, to seek belonging. But over the years, I’ve come to realise just how unique and precious our cultural heritage is. The story of First Nations people, their customs, languages, and deep relationship with this land is something we should jealously guard. It’s not something to fear or mock — it’s something to cherish and nurture. And yes, I know there are concerns about how welcome to country is used. Like any practice, it can be misapplied, overused, or presented without authenticity. I’ve heard arguments about cost, tokenism, and relevance. But even if we accept those as legitimate points of discussion, none of them justify booing. Booing an elder who is performing a sacred cultural duty — particularly during a solemn event like Anzac Day — is indefensible. It disrespects the moment, the people, and the spirit of reconciliation that our nation still desperately needs. Let’s also remember that thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women served in Australia’s armed forces. Many were not even counted as citizens at the time. They fought and died for a country that did not yet fully acknowledge them. Today, including a welcome to country at Anzac ceremonies is not just tradition — it’s part of a healing process. A sign that we are finally recognising all who have served, and all who belong. I work with Indigenous students, families, and elders. I see their pride. I also see their patience — their willingness to keep extending a hand even when some choose to turn their backs. A welcome to country is a gift, not a burden. If you don’t understand it — ask. If you’re unsure — listen. But if your instinct is to boo, then perhaps it’s time to reflect on what it truly means to be Australian. This country is richer because of its First Nations people. Their traditions are not something separate from our national identity — they are at its very heart. We owe them more than silence. We owe them respect.
