Moment driver arrested hiding in Melbourne shopping centre dumpster after alleged police chase across city suburbs

A driver has been caught hiding in a dumpster after allegedly fleeing from police across multiple suburbs in Melbourne’s southeast. Footage captured by the Victoria Police Air Wing reveals the moment officers zero in on the man’s position, as he squats in a large rubbish bin in the loading bay of Carrum Downs shopping centre. When busted by police, the 40-year-old man - dressed in an orange hi-vis hoodie - can be seen climbing out of the dumpster before lying on the ground and being taken into custody. Earlier, police were alerted to a Holden commodore allegedly “travelling erratically” in Mount Eliza, an hour southeast of Melbourne, about 10am on Friday. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over on Gulls Way in Frankston South, but he allegedly fled from police. The police Air Wing tracked the commodore driving into the Carrum Downs shopping centre on Halls Road, where police used a mix of ground patrols, eyes in the sky and security cameras to home in on the man’s location. “The Dandenong man was taken into custody and has been interviewed in relation to his driving behaviour,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. “His commodore was also impounded.” The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
