The Westbred WA Country Derby returned to its regional roots on Saturday night attracting a strong field and some of the State’s leading trainers to Narrogin.

The $30,000 event proved a triumph for trainer Aiden De Campo who had the top two finishers as Bettor Behave, a heat winner at Wagin the previous week, produced a stirring finish to pip Wheelsofortune in the run to the line.

Wheelsofortune had made a bold attempt to lead all the way but was subjected to multiple challenges throughout the race, including from the ultimate winner.

Bettor Behave initially went to the breeze before multiple challengers peeled off from the rear, initially providing cover but eventually forcing driver Kylah Madden to the back of the field.

In an incident-packed last lap, Madden negotiated some interference before circling to challenge Wheelsofortune at the death.

Some Line was 9m adrift in third.

Bred by Karnup Racing, Bettor Behave was a $45,000 purchase by De Campo at the 2024 Yearling sale and is now raced by a large number of stable clients.

Bettor Behave took his stake earnings to nearly $62,000 with the prospect of more race wins in store.

In the following race, the $14,000 WASBA Tribute to Color Glo, provided a worthy winner in Stellar Edition.

Stellar Edition lived up to her name, producing a commanding display to dominate a quality field in a race commemorating Color Glo, an outstanding Westbred Champion mare from the 1960s.

Bringing up her third win a row for owner/breeder and industry stalwart Denise Trobe, Stellar Edition was able to pull away from the Dylan Egerton-Green pair of Miss Vincenza and Our Rich Cargo over the concluding stages to bring up her sixth win.

Chris Voak has transformed Stellar Edition since she has entered his stable, having previously won only three times from 35 starts, and she seems assured of many more triumphs.

She went to the line almost untouched as Voak sat up on her over the last 100m to score most impressively by more than a length.

Being a WASBA-sponsored race, it was more than appropriate for proponent and supporter Trobe to breed the winner from her Jet Laag mare, the $129,000 11-race winner Deluxe Edition, whom she bred from good producer Hindu Sitara.

In fact, the pedigree of Stellar Edition is littered with prominent and successful Westbred stock including Arch Rival, Race Ruler and Suto’s Pride, a link that reverts back to one of WA’s most prominent harness breeders in the Hodgson family.
