Dramatic images as car appears to be swallowed up by sinkhole in Canning Vale

A car has driven into a sinkhole that has opened up on a road east of Perth.

The Toyota Corolla appeared to have “sunk” at the corner of Gateway Boulevard and The Bridgeway in Canning Vale Tuesday just before 4am.

The driver was fortunately not injured in the dramatic ordeal, and police were not required.

Water Corporation said the sinkhole was caused by a burst water main.

“Crews were onsite within 30 minutes and promptly isolated the main, with work now underway to remove the vehicle and make repairs,” a spokesperson said.

“Traffic management is in place and drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.”

About 10 nearby homes have had their water supply cut due to the issue and residents are told they might “notice discoloured water as repairs progress”.

“We wish to apologise for any disruption caused and thank residents for their patience as crews work to complete repairs,” the spokesperson said.

A tow truck is on the scene and the area has been blocked off to traffic by orange cones, while a bobcat is on standby.

It’s understood the car can’t be removed until gas pipelines in the area can be secured and the water has subsided.

About a dozen responders are at the scene from the Water Corporation and incident response.

The car was still in the hole more than five hours afterwards.
