Perth brothers Jake and Callum Robinson have been honoured at an emotional memorial with their heartbroken father leading the paddle out on the San Diego beach his son loved.

Martin Robinson headed for the surf surrounded by his boys’ friends and teammates to paddle out together for a surfer’s goodbye.

From the shore Debra Robinson watched on as they honoured her sons Jake and Callum, who were murdered as well as their friend American friend Jack Carter Rhoad at a remote surf spot in north Mexico.

“I was glad that he got his chance to go out surfing, doing what he loves,” Callum’s friend Daniel Dixon told 7NEWS.

Known as the big koala, Callum was a fixture in San Diego as a well-known player and member of the lacrosse club.

His friends remembered the beast on the field and the gentle giant off it.

“He was a brother, in every sense of the word. He just cared,” his friend Emmett Cahill said.

The Robinson family say Callum considered the United States his second home with the memorial a chance for his friends in the US to celebrate his life and say goodbye to their Australian friend.

“I feel like there aren’t words, like he was just amazing, obviously it’s really heartbreaking,” Tim and Ali Shaeffer said.

Mexican authorities confirmed the parents of Callum and Jake identified the bodies of their sons last Sunday.

The brothers are believed to have been murdered by thieves trying to steal their ute for its tyres.
