Newman elders head to the library to connect through craft

Every Tuesday, elders in Newman have been coming together at the Newman Library for a growing community initiative focused on creativity and connection. The workshops form part of the Shire of East Pilbara’s elders program, delivered in partnership with East Pilbara Independence Support. Designed to promote wellbeing and social engagement, the sessions offer hands-on arts and crafts activities in a relaxed and supportive setting. Participants have already explored a range of creative techniques, from cyanotype printing and paint pouring to resin art, with mosaic-making scheduled for coming weeks. Elders program participant Michelle Mogridge said she enjoyed attending the sessions, getting to connect with the community while learning and sharing new skills. “I really enjoy coming to the craft sessions at the library,” she said. “We don’t just sit around doing nothing, we’re always making something. “Last time I made a dragon, and now I’m making another one. It’s great because we get to stay active and do fun activities. “We’re encouraging others to come along too. “We all get excited about Tuesdays, just like kids going to school. “We look forward to coming together at the library.” The EPIS team plays a key role in the program, providing guidance and assistance throughout each activity. Their support helps ensure the sessions remain inclusive and accessible, encouraging participants to try new skills regardless of experience. Beyond the creative aspect, the program also fosters a strong sense of community. Each session wraps up with a shared lunch, giving attendees the chance to share stories and connect. The initiative has been warmly received, with many elders embracing the opportunity to engage in new experiences while strengthening social ties in a welcoming environment. Shire of East Pilbara president Cr Anthony Middleton said it was encouraging to see local elders fully benefiting from the program “It’s good to see people getting out, trying something new, and having a bit of a laugh together,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about. “We want to keep creating opportunities like this where people can stay active and connected in the community.”
