A man has been charged after allegedly setting his dog loose on police officers and wielding a pickaxe during a barricade in Sydney’s southwest.

Officers performed a welfare check at the man’s Cabramatta West home around 1.20am on Sunday after concerns were reported to police.

When they arrived on the scene, the 46-year-old man allegedly confronted officers with a pickaxe before dropping it and retreating into his home.

Police established a perimeter around the home and called for the assistance of specialist resources.

It will be alleged that the man then threw a glass bottle out of a window aimed at the officers.

The bottle shattered and struck three officers, leaving them with injuries to the chest and face.

The man then allegedly attempted to set his home on fire prompting officers to force entry and remove from the property which he resisted.

A struggle broke out and the man then set his dog on the officers which proceeded to bite two officers as they attempted to restrain it.

The two sergeants were taken to Liverpool Hospital where they were treated for their wounds.

Both officers have recovered and since returned to work.

The police restrained the man and provided first aid before taking him to hospital for assessment.

The 46-year-old was then taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with five offences including intimidation and two counts of assault of police officers in execution of duty, armed with intent to commit indictable offence, throwing a missile and resisting or hindering police officer in the execution of duty.

He has been refused bail and will appear at Fairfield Local Court on Monday.
