Bunbury Summer School to dish up wellbeing through arts in January
The Stirling Street Arts Centre will put on a variety of arts classes in its annual Summer School Program this month.
Stirling Street Arts Centre programs co-ordinator and Bunbury Summer School co-ordinator Shelly Tindale said about 500 people were expected to take part.
“Bunbury Summer School provides a way for people to come together, to share and have a great experience learning something new. The program offers something for everyone from young kids to adults,” she said.
Some of the classes combine different forms of art such as poetry and dance, tea and tarot reading.
Other sessions available involve music, dance, painting, art education and exhibitions, fashion and cooking.
Ms Tindale said there was a wide variety of beginner classes and workshops, such as spoon carving with Bunbury artist Neil Turner, Jenni Doherty’s big canvas botanical painting and Rebecca Cool’s workshop on how to find your own style.
The program has collaborated with Act Belong Commit to help engage the community and assist with promoting good mental health.
“The Act Belong Commit message is extremely important, especially in regional towns where it can be quite isolating and hard to meet new friends or find groups you make a connection with,” Ms Tindale said.
“Joining, belonging to and participating in regular community groups not only gives you the opportunity to learn new skills and experience the positive spin-offs that creating something yourself provides, it also makes a healthy contribution to your mental well-being.”
It is hoped that people who take part in the workshops go on to join community groups such as The Bunbury Studio Potters, Australind Art Club, Bunbury Wood Turners and the Bunbury Apiarist Society.
The program is open now and runs until January 14. It is sponsored by the City of Bunbury, Aqwest, Healthway and Act Belong Commit.
