Volunteers will head into one of the region’s most remote coastal areas next month for the Yeagarup Beach clean-up.

The annual event will return on Sunday, October 18, bringing volunteers and four-wheel-drive owners together to collect rubbish from the beaches, dunes and river mouths near Pemberton.

Pemberton Discovery Tours co-owner Toni Dearle said despite its isolated location, Yeagarup Beach was not immune to rubbish washing ashore.

“Marine debris, fishing rope, plastics, bottles and other material regularly wash ashore or become caught along the beach, dunes and river mouth,” she said.

“In previous years, volunteers have removed extraordinary amounts from this coastline — including around one tonne of debris and more than 2000 individual items each clean-up.”

Mrs Dearle said the event was an important way for the community to help care for an area many people rarely get the chance to visit. “Yeagarup is somewhere we visit regularly, so for us the clean-up is a practical way of helping look after a place we know very well,” she said. “You can arrive somewhere that looks incredibly wild and clean, and then once everyone starts looking properly it is surprising what we find.”

The event is supported by Pemberton Discovery Tours, Tangaroa Blue, Friends of Yeagarup, Keep Australia Beautiful Council and DBCA.

The clean-up is open to families, visitors and residents, with volunteers able to travel to the site aboard Pemberton Discovery Tours vehicles, subject to available seats.

Mrs Dearle said those with suitable four-wheel-drives can also join as tag-alongs, with some expected to arrive from Friday and turn the clean-up into a weekend trip.

“The main clean-up will run for about five hours and participation is free, with transport, lunch, rubbish bags and gloves provided,” she said.

“Volunteers will meet at Crossings Bakery in Pemberton at 9am on the Sunday before heading to Yeagarup.

“Participants should bring water, a hat and suitable footwear, with a reasonable level of fitness required.”

Places in Pemberton Discovery Tours vehicles are limited and advance bookings are essential through the operator’s website.
