South West Girl Guides troop celebrates 110 year anniversary reflecting on over a century of community

A South West Girl Guides troop has celebrated its 110 year anniversary this week reflecting on more than a century of community while raising money for an international cause. On Sunday afternoon, the Bunbury Girl Guides celebrated the milestone looking back on the official opening from November 1915. The afternoon was celebrated by a hall full of people, from all corners of the South West with Forrest MHR Ben Small, Bunbury mayor Jaysen Miguel and Cr Gabi Ghasseb in attendance. The occasion was not only a celebration of the immense achievement, the troop also used the day to raise funds for Sangam — the Girl Guide world centre in India, a service used by Girl Guiding groups all across the world. South West Indian Group treasurer Heather Reid said the Girl Guides provided more than just a fun experience for those involved. “In an age dominated by technology, Girl Guides teaches young people how to operate within a team, how to get out and about and really serve the community,” she said. It teaches them social skills and ultimately makes them more employable down the track, as they have developed foundational skills through the program.” The event was run brilliantly by the team at Bunbury Girl Guides and included plenty of food, fun, Zumba and a fantastic dance performance by Nayana Nair and Vyga Anoop.
