While a deadly algae is not in the South West, community members are concerned over estuary’s long-term health

Experts have confirmed there is no evidence of a deadly algae which killed thousands of fish in South Australia being present in the Leschenault Estuary. It comes as residents are concerned about the long-term health of the estuary, with fears Karenia mikimotoi would be in the waterways as it was in SA. However, a Department of Water and Environmental Regulation spokesperson said the deadly algae had not been detected in the Leschenault Estuary. The DWER spokesperson said they undertake fortnightly monitoring, including regular sampling, to identify species of phytoplankton and micro algae which could impact the health of the estuary. “This monitoring also tracks seagrass habitat, which is a key component to understanding the health of our estuaries,” they said. “Through the Healthy Estuaries WA program, DWER works with industry to reduce the amount of nutrients flowing into the Leschenault from nearby catchments. “In July, more than $1.3 million was allocated to the Leschenault Catchment Council to implement practical, evidence-based projects that reduce nutrient run-off and protect this vital waterway.” Australind’s George Mardon has been working in and around the Leschenault Estuary for the last 40 years, and said he has become concerned about the impact of dredging and the potential of an algal bloom in the estuary. His concerns caught the attention of South Australian Vivienne Henderson, who said similar smaller issues initially began in South Australia last year before the catastrophic outbreak which is currently happening in SA. “Most of the authorities would brush it off as one thing or another that happens occasionally, and as we all know now, it’s turned into something just absolutely horrendous,” she said.
