Youngster strives for game’s pinnacle
Taking up hockey at 10 years old, Ella du Preez is determined to take her love of the sport to the next level.
The 14-year-old midfielder said she enjoyed being out on the field as often as she could.
“It’s a tactical game, but it’s fast and furious,” she said.
“The rush you get going in for tackles and chasing the ball, it’s all exciting.”
The Mary MacKillop College student plays for Boyanup and the South West Strikers and was also selected to represent WA in the under-13 and under-15 State teams.
“I love wearing the black and gold,” she said.
“The experience of playing 13s and 15s and getting out on the pitch has taught me a lot.”
But Ella said her biggest challenge was managing the mental side of the game.
“I’m a tough self-critic and some things aren’t good enough in my eyes, but that’s something I’m hopefully getting better at,” she said.
When asked if she was inspired by a particular player, Ella said there were many talented hockey players with different skills and pointed to the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras as motivation.
Ella said she hoped to play for Australia one day and she was trialling for a spot in the under-15s State team, to be announced in a few weeks.
Ella thanked the Boyanup Hockey Club, Russel Harvey, Lawrie Tyler, Anita Scott, her family and school, and the South West Academy of Sport for their support.
