The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been forced to contend with a fresh wave of speculation after an author and royal commentator made unsubstantiated allegations about the royal couple’s marriage.
Speaking on The Nerve podcast on July 23, Lady Colin Campbell claimed Meghan Markle discovered an alleged affair after finding text messages on Prince Harry’s phone.
She further alleged the woman involved was close to Harry’s age and also lived in Montecito, California.
The allegations have not been supported by any evidence and there is no indication they are true. Prince Harry and Meghan have also not publicly addressed the claims.
According to an insider, however, the rumours have reignited debate over whether the Sussexes should continue ignoring Ms Campbell, who has previously made claims about the pair which were later disputed, or respond more forcefully.
“What isn’t helping their situation is the fact they’ve studiously ignored Lady C, who has, for the past five years, even claimed that Meghan didn’t give birth to either Archie or Lilibet,” the insider told New Idea.
“It’s probably why her new claims about a mistress and Meghan discovering damning texts have gone viral. But suggesting Harry and this woman have been ‘seen out and about’ is bizarre in a world of smartphones.”
The source claims Harry and Meghan reportedly disagree over how the latest claims should be handled. Meghan is said to favour pushing back more forcefully while Harry believes responding publicly would only amplify the speculation.
“As a royal, Harry refuses to engage in this type of low-level gossip, but it’s distressing for Meghan, who wanted to shut down this woman’s outrageous claims years ago,” the inside source added.
They allege the timing has created additional strain as the couple seek to improve their relationship with King Charles III.
“The timing couldn’t be worse – this story exploded right when they’re trying to ingratiate themselves with the King,” the insider continued.
“Things were already tense between Harry and Meghan after she posted those pics at Althorp. Harry’s frustrations at her inability to understand how royals work have reached fever pitch.”
The latest controversy also comes as Harry is dealing with the financial consequences of his unsuccessful privacy case against publishers The Daily Mail. While reports have suggested he faces significant legal costs. the exact amount remains unclear.
“The timing of Lady C’s claims is interesting. Harry may not have the resources to fight another court battle now,” the source added.
