Prince Harry’s sit-down interview with GQ magazine reveals he wants to ‘reconcile’ with family

VideoPrince Harry has stated in a GQ magazine interview that he wants to reconcile with his brother Prince William and father King Charles, while suggesting some people don't want the family rift to heal.

Prince Harry has been forced to defend a remark he made while saying he wanted to “reconcile” with his family.

In a sit down interview with Zach Baron for GQ magazine’s One More Question series, the 42-year-old opened up about the turbulent relationship with his brother and father.

In 2020, Prince Harry caused a major rift in the family when he and his wife Meghan Markle quit royal duties and relocated from the UK to California with their children.

It is understood that Prince Harry and Prince William have barely spoken in years and he only recently reunited with father King Charles.

Speaking with Baron, he acknowledged that family breakdowns were “massively relatable” for many people.

“There’s sibling disagreements, there’s broken relationships between kids and their parents, kids and one parent,” he said.

“Some people might be inspired by efforts to reconcile and this could help their own relationships.

“And some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out.

“With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile, that’s the key point”

Harry’s spokesperson said those latter comments were not meant as a swipe at William or any other family members.

They said the remark “was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family. The comment was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way”.

While recorded in New York in September, the interview’s release coincided with the Sultan of Oman’s state visit to the UK and meeting with the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex, went on to tell GQ that while “scars stick around forever,” he wanted to encourage everybody to let go of the past.

“For me, there’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives than to continue with issues with family,” he said.

“It’s not worth it.”

Prince Harry also discussed themes he has previously talked about, such as the effect of losing his mother Princess Diana when he was 12 and his mental health struggles.

During the 42 minute interview for One More Question, he revealed why he and wife Meghan moved back to the UK in August.

“Opportunities for the family. Being able to put the kids in a British school has meant a lot to me,” he said.

“I didn’t know how important it was to me.

“They (Archie and Lilibet) are loving it, and it’s just giving them a whole different experience.

“To be back, closer to my family, and to be back on UK soil for longer than a few days or a week here or there”.

He also said he hoped that his fraught relationship with the UK press, which partly led to him leaving in the first place and has led to a number of lawsuits against newspaper groups, would now be better.

“My hope is that it will change,” he said.

“There have been some battles that have been fought, necessarily so. But hopefully we can all draw a line under that.

“As with everything else that’s going on in the world, there’s aspects of the past that I’m sure all of us, me, my family, some of the British press, that we’d all like to leave behind us and work for the greater good.”
