RSPCA WA to host free pet health checks in Cooloongup to assist pet owners experiencing financial hardship

RSPCA WA will offer free pet health advice and supplies in Cooloongup on August 18 as more evidence emerges that high living costs are forcing animal owners into tough, and sometimes cruel, choices. The Rockingham district ranked sixth in the State for animal cruelty reports in 2023-24, with pets often suffering in accordance with their owners’ financial pressures. RSPCA WA executive manager of animal and enforcement operations Hannah Dreaver said pet owners were increasingly asking for help amid the rising cost-of-living and housing struggles. “Sixth spot is high so it’s hoped this support will ease some pressure on family budgets and help stop small health problems for pets from becoming big and expensive ones,” Ms Dreaver said. “We want to keep much-loved pets together with their owners wherever possible. If you could benefit from a little help with your animals, please come along and take advantage of this free support.” City of Rockingham mayor Deb Hamblin said the region’s high ranking still represented just a small minority of the city’s pet-owning population. “The vast majority of our residents are caring, responsible pet owners who value the wellbeing of animals,” she said. “We encourage residents to continue speaking up to protect vulnerable animals. Together, we can ensure our city remains a safe and compassionate place for all creatures, great and small.” Staff and volunteers from RSPCA will be at Paul Garnett Oval for next weekend’s free event to perform health checks and microchipping for dogs, provide flea and worming treatments for cats and dogs, share dog training tips, and answer other queries. Vet staff and students from South Metropolitan TAFE will conduct the health checks, with an RSPCA dog trainer and inspectors also on site. The community action day aims to help those who may be struggling with the costs of caring for their pets, running from 1pm-3pm. Registration via the RSPCA website is essential. Social, vaccinated dogs and puppies are welcome on a leash. Due to welfare concerns, cats are not permitted to attend.
