Improving air quality, comfort and safety at the Leschenault Leisure Centre’s indoor aquatic facilities is the aim of a million dollar investment by the Shire of Harvey.

The shire has invested $1.2 million to install a brand new heating, ventilation and air condition system.

HVAC systems control the air inside buildings, with the system working harder in indoor aquatic environments due to warm water, high humidity and the use of pool chemicals.

While bringing in fresh air, removing stale air and chemical by-products, controlling temperature and humidity, protecting people and the building, an effective operating system will aim to reduce strong chemical smells, minimise irritations, improve visibility and create a more comfortable environment.

Shire of Harvey president Michelle Campbell said the council had been listening to community feedback about quality and comfort at the centre, with some concerns raised relating to ‘ambient air conditions’.

“Our regular asset maintenance inspections have also determined the need for improvement in this space,” she said.

“The health and wellbeing of our patrons and staff is a priority.

“It should always be a refreshing and enjoyable experience when community members go for a swim.

“This is why we have invested $1.2 million into a new HVAC system for the centre.”

Cr Campbell said the new HVAC system was an important upgrade.

“It will significantly improve air circulation, remove airborne irritants, and create a safer, more comfortable indoor environment,” she said.

Cr Campbell acknowledged the community’s interest in additional improvements at LLC, saying it was on the shire’s radar.

“A comprehensive asset maintenance audit is currently under way to help us understand where investment is needed most and we’ll be updating the community as soon as we have our priorities finalised,” she said.

“A huge thank you to the community for their feedback and support while this work gets done.

“We’re looking forward to making every visit to the centre more comfortable for everyone.”
