Bunbury has welcomed nearly 120 new citizens to its community in a moving ceremony which marked the beginning of the City’s Australia Day celebrations.
Hundreds of people, many having just completed the annual Australia Day Fun Run around the Leschenault Inlet, gathered at Bicentennial Square for breakfast and the swearing in of new citizens.
New Australians from 30 different home countries were sworn in by Bunbury Mayor Jaysen Miguel and Forrest MP Nola Marino.
The City also recognised some of its finest volunteers and contributors, with former music teacher, long-time choir leader, fundraiser and carer Margaret Duce awarded Bunbury’s Citizen of the Year.
Promising young basketballer Candace Edwards won Young Citizen of the Year for her work mentoring young people through sport, while the South West Aboriginal Medical Service and the Bunbury PCYC shared the Community Group of the Year award for their collaborative work on the Making Good Pathways project.
