Beware lottery phone scam

Bunbury Herald

Consumer protection is working alongside Lotterywest in alerting WA mobile phone users about an SMS Powerball scam.

People have been receiving an SMS message claiming their mobile number has been awarded a certain amount of money and to claim their prize they need to send an email with their bank details to a web address.

In Bunbury three people have already come forward to Bunbury Department ofConsumer Protection about receiving this message.

Senior regional officer Tresslyn Smith said people needed to be cautious of text messages and if they received a message they should delete it immediately.

‘‘We strongly advise you don’t contact the number,’’ she said.

‘‘Never pay money in advance to receive a prize.’’

Mrs Smith’s major concern was that consumers were transferring money.

‘‘When you wire transfer money no-one can trace back to the offender.’’

Mrs Smith said people needed to raise public awareness of scams.

‘‘Keep an eye out, tell your friends, tell your family and be aware,’’ she said.

To report a scam contact Consumer Protection on 1300 304 054.
