Guests including the first baby he delivered at the old Bunbury Regional Hospital and the Sisters of St John of God Perth joined Dr Ern Manea and more than 100 people at the launch of the book about his life.

Manea: The Story of a Remarkable Life – the tale of Dr Ern Manea’s amazing exploits – was launched at a special reception in Bunbury on Sunday afternoon.

The book is written by Baden Pratt and details the life, dedication and good works of Dr Manea.

Fremantle MHR Melissa Parke, who attended the event, was the first baby born at the former Bunbury Regional Hospital.

She was one of more than 3500 babies Dr Manea delivered during his career as a doctor.

The book launch also coincided with the celebration of 60 years service Dr Manea has given to Bunbury and the South West.

“In the process of this book being written, there were occasions that made me think about where I have ended up,” Dr Manea said.

“My life changed dramatically when I came Bunbury because of the St John of God Sisters and the kindness they showed me.”

Bunbury Mayor David Smith said the book went into great detail about Dr Manea’s civic life.

“I believe his 17 years as mayor of Bunbury and 10 years as a councillor, more than a quarter of a century of commitment – most of it voluntary – has been so significant that it alone deserves recognition,” he said.

“Whatever the accolade, we can all know that we have been fortunate to have lived in a time when a man of substance has laid down his life in so many areas to see that others – many not so fortunate – can thrive.”

Dr Manea has also been an important figure in Australian Rules Football, international trotting and education.

“Look at the list of organisations Dr Manea was a life member or was involved in,” Mr Smith said.

A plaque celebrating Dr and Mrs Manea was erected in Centennial Gardens, adjoining the Bunbury City Council chambers.
