Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade create pink firetruck to raise funds for breast cancer prevention

Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is doing more than just fighting fires, raising nearly $5000 for breast cancer prevention after adding some colour to one of their fire trucks. Rolling its way through the Bunbury bush fire station at the weekend the now bright pink fire truck is the brigade’s latest initiative to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade captain Terri Kowal said the fundraiser started after one of the brigade’s members was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. “(The diagnosis) sort of rocked us and came as a big shock, we just felt helpless,” she said. “I saw the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Go Pink campaign . . . We had been doing that and then one day I thought ‘maybe we could take this a bit further and make our truck go pink as well’.” The brigade has so far raised $4718 just through social media campaigning, but Ms Kowal said the pink truck will “bring people in”. “(The truck) will help us raise awareness . . . It’s something different and it’s something new so it’s exciting,” she said. Bunbury sign shop Spencer Signs vinyl-wrapped the truck free of charge for the brigade. Bunbury MLA Don Punch said it was “brilliant” to see the two working together. “Small business in Bunbury and the South West has always been really supportive in community organisations and Spencer Signs have done a brilliant job on the fire engine,” he said. “With a pink fire truck going around nobody should be under any illusions about what they’re doing . . . I’d really encourage people to get behind the brigade.” The truck will remain pink until the September fire season.
