Daffodil Day fundraiser at Bunbury’s Dot’s Place cancer support centre

Bunbury cancer support centre Dot’s Place is once again taking part in the Cancer Council’s most iconic fundraiser — the Daffodil Day Appeal. Dot’s Place Bunbury will be selling flowers in the centre’s garden on Thursday, which marks 36 years since the fundraiser began. Funds raised go towards vital cancer research and the Cancer Council is hoping to raise $2 million this year. “An estimated 13,000 West Australians are diagnosed with cancer every year,” Cancer Council South West regional education officer Julie Rose said. “This means every day another 36 West Aussies will hear the words ‘you have cancer’.” Ms Rose said cost-of-living pressures had made it harder for people to donate towards vital research recently, but this research was more important than ever. “Despite advances made in research and improving survival rates for many cancers, we know that almost one in two Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 85,” she said. “Thanks to investment in research over many years, amazing advancements have been made in cancer prevention, screening and treatment — helping to increase survival rates from almost 50 per cent in the 1980s to just under 70 per cent today. Daffodils and raffle tickets will be on sale at Dot’s Place between 9am and 1.30pmon Thursday and at Bunbury Forum Shopping Centre and Parks Centre Shopping Centre from 8.30am-5pm, or until sold out.
