Kelly’s seven sinks Donnybrook
A seven-goal haul by tall forward Leigh Kelly led the Eaton Boomers to a 121-point win against Donnybrook at Glen Huon Reserve on Sunday.
The Dons put up a good fight against the finals-bound Boomers, but were unable to score in the second half as Eaton ran away 20.17 (137) to 2.4 (16) winners.
The Boomers were boosted before the game with former WAFL player Kane Bloxsidge returning from injury and ruckman Brendan Page celebrating his 50th League game for the club.
The game had two interesting match-ups, with Donnybrook coach Shane Smith sending key position player Simon Parry to Eaton power forward Jake Ferrier and Page battling reigning Hayward Medallist Josh Smith in the ruck.
The Eaton Boomer’s midfield showed it was all class throughout the day, with Josh Bowe and the in-form Jye Cormack tormenting the Dons’ defenders throughout the game with plenty of quality entry inside the forward 50.
Parry fought hard on Ferrier and often left him in the goal square to be the third man up in many contests to help out his fellow defenders, but the constant forward pressure by the Boomers allowed them to have 37 scoring shots on goal for the day.
With a 36 point lead at half-time, the Boomers still had work to do to shake the fighting Dons, but it didn’t take long for them to take control of the game and show why they are a chance to take their second consecutive premiership.
Ferrier could have kicked a bag, but inaccuracy in front of goals meant he could only walk away with 4.4.
Kelly dominated a tired Donnybrook defence in the last quarter, kicking four goals for the term to give him seven for the day.
For the Dons, Parry, Smith, Curtis Guglielmana and Chris Sheehan tried to get their team over the line, but unfortunately there were too many passengers wearing the big V.
The Eaton Boomers will take a lot of confidence from this game heading into their blockbuster clash with fellow premiership contenders Bunbury next Sunday.
