Mateus Murphy purchased ad in South Western Times newspaper to propose to girlfriend Georgie Delfino

A Perth romantic has popped the question to the love of his life using a local newspaper in what has become the West Australian response to a furious Eastern States woman’s full page advert calling out her cheating husband. Mateus Murphy made the ultimate public show of affection when he purchased an ad in the South Western Times paper on Thursday to propose to his Bunbury girlfriend George Delfino. The ad, which was seen by thousands of weekly readers across the State’s South, said: “Georgie D, you deserve the very best. Someone who will back you without limits, let you grow without borders and love you without end — will you marry me?” It is a stark contrast to a regional newspaper ad that has gone viral in recent weeks, where a Queensland woman used her husband’s credit card to publicly call him out for cheating. The scarring message, printed in the Mackay & Whitsunday Life, read: “Dear Steve. I hope you’re happy with her. Now the whole town will know what a filthy cheater you are. From Jenny”. But there was nothing but love in the air when 26-year-old Mateus wrapped the South Western Times in heart cellophane and set it up between roses in a Bunbury hotel on Thursday, next to a card telling his fiance-to-be to “check page 2.” Mateus said Georgie, 22, knew what was happening before she even opened the paper, as she already “ran around screaming that she was engaged.” He was eventually able to get down on one knee and officially pop the question. “She is always telling me I’m not very romantic, so I thought I better prove her wrong,” he said. “A lot of thought, love and attention went into everything that led to this moment, I wanted to make the proposal one for her to remember as the most important and exciting day of our lives so far. “I thank all the people at the South Western Times office for helping me out, we are very appreciative.” Georgie said she was over the moon and absolutely loved the idea to print the proposal in the paper. “I was surprised he had proposed so publicly,” she said. “I didn’t expect it at all, I always say to him as a joke you’re not romantic and then he went and did this so I didn’t see it coming, that’s for sure. “I’m feeling really excited, I just really love him so this is crazy.” The pair said they will celebrate their engagement in their Bunbury hotel.
