Passenger opinions invited on preferred replacement services for “unreliable” Australind Train closure

Passengers of a “really unreliable” South West-based train line which is set to have major long-term disruptions have been invited to have their say on potential replacement services. Users of the Australind Train, which links Bunbury to Perth, will be contacted with a survey about preferred replacement services after a shock announcement in February that the train would be out of action for up to 18 months for Metronet works. The problematic train service, which spent more than 100 days off the rails in 2021, uses the line between Armadale station and Perth city and will be affected during the extended shutdown starting in early 2023. The shutdown is needed to facilitate major works on three rail projects. The State Government-run survey opened on Friday, April 1, through the Building For Tomorrow website, where passengers can share their opinions on replacement transport services. Options for replacements include a direct link between Mandurah and Bunbury, a direct link between Bunbury and the CBD, and an all-stops service between Perth and Bunbury. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said public feedback was necessary to have as little disruption as possible to commuters. “We know the Armadale line closure will be disruptive for Australind passengers and we want to hear what replacement services passengers would like to see throughout the closure,” she said. “All options are on the table and we want to hear from passengers and the community to help us plan replacement services.” Bunbury MLA Don Punch said the closure of the line was vital for future connections from the metro area into the region. “The Australind is a vital part of Bunbury and while causing some disruption along the way, the temporary closure of the Armadale line will eventually deliver big improvements to safety and to the way passengers travel to Perth and throughout the South West,” he said. “The Minister has said all replacement options are on the table and I encourage everyone to have their say about what they would like to see.” Australind passengers will be contacted from April 1 to take part in the survey, which will be available all month, but feedback can be provided through the Building For Tomorrow website feedback form.
