Proud artists recognised at Biennale

Bunbury Herald

Bunbury still life artist Crispin Akerman is proud to have his work professionally hung and recognised among contemporary artists at the Bunbury Biennale.

“It’s nice to compare my art to others and be able to reach a different audience,” he said.

“There is a good collection and it’s great to be a part of it.”

His entry was created in two weeks and was based on the King Cottage quince tree.

He said the quinces represented Bunbury’s history and the importance of having a connection to the city’s past.

The other elements in his oil painting include Chinese ceramics as a slight statement on the business and political connection between Australia and China.

He said the shapes and colours of the quince and pomegranate were his inspiration because they offered a dynamic contrast to the other elements of the painting.

Mr Akerman said he left the background rough and unpolished because he wanted to have dimension in the artwork.

“If it’s all finished perfectly there’s no life,” he said.
