As the scorching summer weather sets in, the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River are reminding residents the prohibited burning period has begun.

Starting from 12.01 am on December 23, no burning of any form is allowed in the shire, including campfires, firepits and fuel reduction burns.

The prohibited burning period will remain until March 14, 2026, unless extended as in previous years — all current permits to burn would then be cancelled.

Shire president Julia Jean-Rice urged people in the area to remain vigilant.

“To keep our community safe, the rule is simple. No fires, any where, any time,” she said.

“Whether you live here or are visiting over the summer, please do the right thing. You don’t want your actions to cause a bushfire.”

Ms Jean-Rice encouraged all residents to have a bushfire plan, with an outline of actions to take if one was to start.

“It should only take 15 minutes to prepare and will help you to stay calm if an emergency does happen and avoid risky last-minute decisions,” she said.

Additional measures such as total fire bans along with harvest and vehicle movement bans will be used when needed for further protections.

The fire and emergency management page on the shire’s website contains more information regarding fire preparedness and requirements.
