Suburb's reputation at stake: resident

ERIENNE LETTEBunbury Herald

Treendale residents are scared the reputation of their suburb will be tarnished once seven new affordable housing units are built later this year.

The Department of Housing has submitted a development application for a lot on Star Street with plans to build seven, three-bedroom affordable housing units.

The units will be purchased under a shared equity scheme with the selected builder for people who can not purchase a home on their own.

Treendale resident Katrina Giffen said she purchased in the area because of its high standard of living.

‘‘There is a higher social economic group of people in the suburb,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s certainly not cheap to live here.’’

Ms Giffen has lived in the area for four years and said she did not think the new development would uphold the current standard of living.

‘‘We bought here for a reason and we want the quality to stay the same,’’ she said.

Department Commercial and Business Operations acting general manager Stewart Kestel said the seven homes would be for sale.

‘‘They are not intended for social housing,’’ he said.

‘‘The development will provide an excellent opportunity for people to purchase their own home at an affordable price.’’

Mr Kestel said the area was chosen because there was a demand for this type of housing in the area.

‘‘The site is well located close to all amenities, including shopping centres, education facilities and employment opportunities,’’ he said.

Treendale developer Kevin Coote said the suburb had strict development guidelines.

‘‘The building and development guidelines maintain the standard of living in Treendale,’’ he said.

‘‘Homeowners and builders are required to maintain this standard.

‘‘The suburb has a reputation of being an exclusive suburb which will be maintained by the developers.’’

The department is currently waiting on planning approval from Harvey Shire Council.

If plans are approved the construction is hoped to begin in June.

Residents can comment on the development by emailing michael@harvey.wa.gov.au by May 11.
