Boyanup Hockey Club product Ky Fisher has capped off his underage State representation with a gold medal at the recent Hockey Australia Under 21 Championships.

Fisher was part of the WA side that beat Victoria 2-1 in the men’s final last month after an undefeated week at the tournament.

The halfback has represented WA in every team possible, starting with Under 12s, but this was his first gold medal at a national tournament.

“It was awesome to win and an unreal feeling for the team,” he said.

“For all the hard work we put in, to win that gold medal was awesome.

“I have never won gold before, I have been part of every possible State team, from Under 12s all the way through, so to win gold at Under 21s was sick.”

In the women’s competition, South West products Belle Ramshaw, Ella Du Preez and Maddison Fenwick earned themselves a silver medal after falling agonisingly short in the final against Victoria.

Trailing 2-0 in the final with seven minutes to go, WA scored twice to take the game to extra time, before losing in a shoot-out.

Fisher said it was exciting to see another talented crop of South West players coming out of the elite pathway of hockey in the State.

“It is good from a South West point of view seeing kids coming through, especially at this age group,” he said.

“You usually get a lot of Bunbury kids playing State in the younger years, but not so many in the older years.

“So to see so many South West players was great.”

Back at home, Boyanup remain nine points clear at the top of the South West Hockey League ladder with a 3-1 win over the second-placed Wests.

In the women’s competition, Associates have broken away and sit five points clear on top after Boyanup drew 1-1 with Robins.
