The Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is a finalist in the 2020 WA Fire and Emergency Service awards.

The award is a team achievement award that acknowledges a volunteer brigade, team or taskforce who together have made a real difference in their community over the past 12 months.

With more than 40 members in the brigade, captain Terri Kowal was proud of the achievement of being named as a finalist.

“I’m very humbled,” she said.

“We’re out there to do what we can for the community and we pride ourselves on going above and beyond,” she said.

“Not only do we commit ourselves to our own community but we commit ourselves to other communities as well, travelling out to different regions to help with fires.

Ms Kowal said a few of the members from the Bunbury brigade had travelled to New South Wales in the past 12 months.

“Taking a week off work to give those fireys in need a helping hand, it’s a massive commitment to do something like that,” she said.

“I’m proud of everyone in the brigade for their efforts.”

Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade’s 16-year-old member, Jordan McIntosh, was nominated for the youth achievement award.

The award recognises an exceptional volunteer under the age of 25 who has stood out among their peers as capable and extraordinary.

Winners will be announced at the awards gala dinner in October.
