Bunbury locals brave wet weather to commemorate Anzac Day

Despite gloomy and wet conditions, hundreds of Bunbury people turned out to the CBD to commemorate those who gave their lives defending Australia and New Zealand as part of Anzac Day services across the country. The Bunbury RSL hosted a dawn service at the Bunbury War Memorial on Victoria Street, which saw hundreds of people brave the wet weather to pay their respects. Later in the morning, people gathered at the Graham Bricknell Music Shell for the main service, with parade participants and members of the public gathering in the wintry conditions. During his address, Bunbury RSL sub-branch John Gelmi thanked those who turned out to the services despite the “trying conditions”. Guest of honour, Vietnam veteran Brigadier Richard Lawler AM said the solid turn-out to the morning service was “a credit to the people of Bunbury for turning out in the foul weather”. “I know that in the dry you’d probably have five times that many but you’ve got to recognise that the cold and wet is not something people would appreciate but the diehards were here,” he said. “The ones that would have come hell or high-water.” Following the morning service, people were invited to the Bunbury RSL to enjoy lunch and watch the traditional Collingwood vs Essendon Anzac Day AFL match.
