Dalyellup childcare centre plays Santa by making gift hamper for local police away from families at Christmas
A South West childcare centre is playing Santa and teaching children the true meaning of giving at Christmas by supporting local police working over the festive period.
Montessori Early Years and Care Centre Dalyellup manager Lorraine O’Reilly said they had a diverse range of children from different cultures and wanted to teach a festive lesson they could all take part in.
Ms O’Reilly said they started a learning program about community members who would be working over the Christmas period and would not be home with their families.
“We all get to spend more time with our families at this point of the year, but that’s not the case for everyone and we wanted the children to understand that,” she said.
“We thought of making a hamper for the police because this is a busy time of year for them and local businesses pitched in to help.
“You can talk about things, but making it a physical project helps them to learn in a different way.”
The hamper features sweet treats officers can enjoy at work including fudge and coffee vouchers donated by Dalyellup businesses.
