Lagoon to boost plant’s efficiency

One of the South West’s oldest meat processors is set to increase production by 47 per cent and make room for an additional 80,000 cattle.

On Tuesday night the Harvey Shire Council approved a development application from Harvey Beef to construct a 24 megalitre capacity covered anaerobic lagoon at the company’s Seventh Street facility.

The wastewater lagoon will be located adjacent to the existing abattoir and will allow the company to increase production from 170,000 cattle per year to 250,000 per year.

Pleased with the council’s decision, Harvey Beef general manager Wayne Shaw said the lagoon is part of a wider plan to improve the plant’s overall efficiency.

“Harvey Beef plant is a key asset for the WA cattle industry and we are keen to see it remain as a state of the art facility able to meet the processing needs of the industry,” Mr Shaw said.

“The CAL is primarily to treat the waste water from the plant so that we can irrigate it on our farm to grow crops, and will replace our existing uncovered anaerobic lagoon that serves the same function.

“Harvey Beef takes environmental sustainability very seriously and we see this project as a very positive step in this regard.”

Mr Shaw said that while there will be an increase in truck traffic into and out of the plant, the company does not expect this to make a noticeable different to the public.

The proposed lagoon is expected to be 110m wide and 2.6m above natural ground level, visible from nearby properties.

“Harvey Beef is an iconic business in the region and it is great to see the organisation expanding its capacity,” Harvey shire president Paul Gillett said.

Site works are intended to be undertaken during the summer months when the groundwater is at its lowest level, with construction set to begin in December.
