Bunbury Regional Prison was one of eight prisons across WA found with contraband items following a Statewide coordinated search of visitor carparks at the weekend.

Corrective Services Commissioner Tony Hassall said it was clear that some prison visitors were not getting the message.

“Prison provides an opportunity to break the cycle of reoffending, often driven by drug addiction,” he said.

“Those who attempt to smuggle contraband risk harming those they claim to care about.”

At Bunbury Regional Prison, eight mobile phones were seized, five from one single-occupant vehicle.

All those caught with contraband will now be assessed for suitability for future visits.

“We will continue to take swift action against anyone who attempts to smuggle drugs or contraband into the prison,” Mr Hassall said.

“Any prison visitor who is considering breaking the law needs to think very hard as to whether they want to miss Christmas visits with loved ones, because they will.”
