The spectacular migration of salmon from the State’s south coast towards the South West and metro areas is about to begin. It marks the beginning of one of WA fishers’ favourite seasons, with local salmon described as “acrobatic, hard-fighting and abundant”. Recfishwest has also launched its annual Salmon Slam — a three-month long competition where fishers can upload photos of their best catches in a bid to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Recfishwest chief executive Andrew Rowland said the organisation wanted to encourage people to get involved in the “iconic” WA pastime. “Salmon is a part of the West Aussie fishing lifestyle,” he said. “It’s WA’s salmon abundance that underpins the awesome fishing experiences enjoyed by so many anglers in the Great Southern, South West and when we get a good run in the metro.” More than 1600 fishers took part in last year’s competition and entrants can upload their images to a dedicated Salmon Slam app.
