Six new signs at the end of Jetty Road near iconic Arrol Crane celebrate Bunbury Jetty’s history

A series of new interpretive signs have been unveiled at the end of Bunbury’s historic former timber jetty. The new signs at the end of Jetty Road at the Bunbury Port were officially revealed on June 30, and the City said they were designed to “complement” the Department of Transport’s recent restoration of the iconic Arrol Crane at the same location. The six signs detail the history of the jetty, from what was done for fun at the historic location, to the difficulties of keep the former wooden structure standing. Acting Mayor Tresslyn Smith said the port and jetty had international significance, with timber from the Bunbury Port said to have been used to line the London Underground. The City said the interpretive signs celebrated the importance of the historic area to the community, and shared the stories of workers and industries over the years. Bunbury MLA Don Punch said it was great to see the story of Bunbury told through the panels. “When you look at the crane and at the causeway, it brings back all that history of Bunbury as a port and all of the people who worked out here, all of the people who have lived and passed away,” he said. “It is over generations, and celebrating that history and our heritage helps us to understand where we are heading too.” The City said the project was made possible by community members of the Bunbury Timber Jetty Environment and Conservation Society and artwork from Bunbury artists, Karrak Designs. The signs were seen by the City as another attraction for a precinct which continued to be enhanced through the State Government’s Transforming Bunbury’s Waterfront project.
