Volunteer roles a key to adventure

Phil Mander has met legendary musicians, WA footballing royalty and famous comedians while volunteering, but his bonds with fellow volunteers are the ones he values most. Mr Mander, pictured, was recognised for 50 years of voluntary service recently with a certificate from Bunbury MLA Don Punch. “He called me and asked if I was home,” Mr Mander said. “Then he came round and gave me the certificate himself and took a photo. “I knew it was coming up, but it doesn’t feel like 50 years.” Mr Mander has volunteered for more than a decade at the PCYC and West Coast Eagles. He has also been involved with the SES, Telethon, Appealathon and worked with the City of Bunbury, Salvation Army, Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre and most recently the Dolphin Discovery Centre among others. “I used to drive the celebrities around,” he said. “I’ve met Olivia Newton-John, John Farnham, Julia Morris and quite a few others.” During his 10 years with the Eagles’ support staff, Mr Mander witnessed two premierships and built relationships with some of WA footy’s biggest names. “I was in charge of looking after the 1992 and 1994 premiership cups,” he said. “I got on well with the late Chris Mainwaring, he had a heart bigger than the State. “He was the first out to training and he would not leave until every autographed was signed. “Mick Malthouse is also a very good man.” “That was the best era of the football club, they were my idols.” Mr Mander continues to maintain the facilities at the Dolphin Discovery Centre, despite the centre being temporarily closed. He said his favourite part of volunteering was the people he worked with. “At the Dolphin Discovery Centre, we’re all like a big family,” he said. “It gives me a good feeling to know that I’m helping someone.”
