WANL 2023: New-look Souwest Jets grounded by East Freo Sharks in 37-goal drubbing

The new-look Souwest Jets look to have their work cut out for them this WA Netball League season after they were blitzed by the East Freo Sharks by 37 goals. The Jets began their 2023 campaign against the Sharks at Gold Netball Centre on Friday, March 10. While the Jets got off to a fast start, with Giselle Taylor scoring a few early goals and strong defence by Brooke O’Connor, it did not take long for the Sharks to fight back with quick driving and accurate shots on goal by Larrissa Harrison. As the Sharks began to pull away, the Jets fought back with strong driving by Elycce Webb and good movement by Brooke Gibson. At quarter-time, the Sharks led 18-7. Despite another fast start by Gibson and the returning Ella Eastaugh early in the second quarter, inaccurate shots on goal and wayward passes saw the Sharks capitalise and begin to extend their lead. The Jets defenders soon found themselves under pressure with Harrison and Rose Aryang scoring shot after shot, while Jessica Repacholi made fantastic interceptions for the Sharks to extend their lead out to 15 goals by half-time. The second half saw the Sharks continue putting their foot down, dominating the court and extending their lead further and further while inaccurate shots continued to hinder the Jets. While the Jets fought hard and put their bodies on the line, they were ultimately overwhelmed by the Sharks, who went on to win 70-33. The Jets will need to find a way to bounce back and continue fostering new connections between teammates when they host their first home game against the Southside Demons at Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Jets’ 20 & Under team fell short against East Freo Sharks 64-43.
