Collie residents who chose to shop local have helped reinvest more than $2 million into the town’s economy over the festive season.

The Collie Chamber of Commerce once again ran the Shop Local Christmas Competition, hoping to build on the success of the previous competition.

Locals and visitors to Collie spent $2,513,950 in the town through the competition, with 42 businesses taking part this year, to bring the total prize pool to a whopping $4200.

First prize, a $3000 chamber Christmas gift voucher, was sold at Thomson’s Auto Parts.

Business owner Doran Thomson said the business was a great way to give back to the community.

“The competition works and people love it. It’s good to give back to the community,” he said.

Second prize, a $700 chamber gift voucher, was sold at Collie Shoeland and the $500 gift voucher for third prize was sold at Taree.

Chamber of Commerce treasurer James Clarke said the competition was once again a huge success.

“After another successful year, it’s great to see so many locals supporting each other through local business,” Mr Clarke said.

This year was the first year shoppers could make five separate $10 purchases from the one store to count towards one entry into the competition.

Last year’s competition resulted in $2.6 million being spent in the Collie community.
