Spring sun here to stay as Perth’s high temperatures to leave rain in rear view
After four, long, wet, dreary months — it appears the spring sun is finally here to stay.
The Perth metropolitan area is set to enjoy a week of days where the maximum temperature will hover in the late 20s, including a top of 29C on Wednesday.
The last time the temperature reached higher than 29C in Perth was more than four months ago on May 9 (33.8C).
It is expected to be even hotter in the city’s eastern suburbs, with Midland set to reach 31C on Wednesday and Thursday and Ellenbrook 30C on Wednesday and Thursday.
Weather Bureau duty forecaster Catherine Schelfhout said it appeared the cold weather was finally behind us.
“We’ve finally moved onto a spring pattern where we have a ridge extending across the south of the State, it’s quite persistent, so we can expect an extended period of east to north easterly winds and clear skies,” she said.
“Those north easterly winds draw down the warmer air from northern WA and we are also getting to a period where the days are longer and the sun is moving further south so warmer temperatures can be expected.”
Perth experienced its wettest winter in 30 years, with September already exceeding the average rainfall, with 96mm of rain, compared to the average of 79.33mm.
It is the fourth month in a row where the monthly average rainfall was exceeded. A weak cold front is expected on Thursday and Friday, however rainfall levels will still be low.
“We had a slow start to winter but then a very wet July and August,” Ms Schelfhout said.
“We certainly had wetter conditions than we’ve had for a long time.
“And even the start of September was wetter than average. We’ve already exceeded our September rainfall, but we are unlikely to see much rainfall for the rest of the month.
“At this stage, it definitely looks like we’ve switched over into spring and we might not see much rainfall from now on as we move into summer.”
Around the State, Port Hedland and Marble Bar are due to reach 37C on Monday. Broome will hit 40C on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Albany will have a maximum temperature of 18C on Monday and Bunbury 23C.
