Two people are dead and 10 others are injured after a truck drove through a field where a children’s soccer game was taking place in the US state of Kansas on Saturday morning local time.
A six-year-old boy and 35-year-old man were killed at the scene.
The injured include two children aged 5, two aged 8, a 9-year-old and five adults, while an 11th person was hospitalised for non-traumatic medical issues.
All other injuries are confirmed to be traumatic but non-life-threatening according to Wichita Police.
The driver of the truck is confirmed to be a 34-year-old woman who had a child attending a game at the same soccer complex.
Two minors were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” Wichita police Chief Joe Sullivan said.
The woman remains in custody but police did not confirm if she had been charged.
First responders have cleared the area of any further public threat.
Mayor Lily Wu issued a statement on Facebook advising people to avoid the area during the investigation and declaring her heartbreak.
“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” she said.
“Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon, watching their children play soccer and no one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold.
“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved.”
