US Marines return to Darwin for training rotation

United States Marines have returned to Darwin for an eight-month rotation conducting training exercises.

Their arrival shows Australia's strong alliance with the US and commitment to a stable Indo-Pacific region, Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Saturday.

"For more than 12 years, US Marine rotations have demonstrated the importance of enhancing the capability and interoperability of both nations through joint exercises and activities, and in 2024 we will continue to build on this capability," he said.

ADF personnel will join the Marines for training exercises during the rotation.

Commanding officer Colonel Brian Mulvihill said his Marines were excited to continue a legacy of working with Australian forces.

"Our strong alliance contributes to stability in the region and makes all our forces more ready to respond to any crisis or contingency that arises," he said.
