Adelaide Crows captain Jordan Dawson has issued a heartbreaking statement about his brother Jaryd, saying his death has left a “hole in my heart”.

Alarm bells were raised after the AFL star’s brother went missing on Tuesday, April 14, near Robe in the south-east of South Australia.

Tragically, his body was discovered by emergency services the following day.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

On Sunday, Dawson broke his silence over the tragedy in a moving post on social media.

“My brother. My idol. The hole in my heart hurts so bad pal but I know you’re at peace,” he said.

“You made me who I am today and I’m going to pass every bit of that competitive, stubborn, caring and passionate nature onto your beautiful boy.

“Huddy and Jess have an army behind them. I’ll miss you and love you forever Rod.”

Dawson posted the emotional statement with a series of images and video featuring the two brothers and their extended families.

His comments follow emotional scenes at the Crows’ match against St Kilda on Saturday night.

The crowd at Adelaide Oval gave a standing ovation in the 12th minute (corresponding with his brother’s player number) when a tribute to Jaryd was shown on-screen.

Dawson was filmed watching the tribute from the stands in tears.

Speaking after Adelaide secured a thrilling one-point victory, veteran Taylor Walker said the standing ovation was a “special moment” and paid tribute to the Dawsons.

“Really challenging week for our football club. I think when things happen like this in footy clubs, the best place to be is a footy club,” he said.

“We’re going to wrap our arms around the Dawsons for a long time.

“It will be nice to get the skipper back when he’s ready so this is for all the Dawson family.”

Coach Matthew Nicks appeared to mention the family tragedy to his players in an emotional pre-match address.

The club had previously released a statement saying it was “deeply saddened” by Jaryd’s death.

“On behalf of the board, executive, staff, coaches and players, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Dawson family,” the club said.

“Jordan is a much‑loved and respected leader, and the club will be guided by him and his family as we provide the appropriate care and support.

“During this incredibly difficult time, the club asks that the Dawsons be given space and privacy.”
