VideoWayne Carey caught in heated fight outside pub

AFL great Wayne Carey has been filmed in an ugly confrontation outside a pub.

The footage shows the dual-premiership captain arguing with two men outside the Albert Park Hotel in Melbourne’s inner city.

The incident started when one of the men allegedly verbally abused the former North Melbourne captain inside the pub on Thursday night.

Carey said the pair — one of whom he is filmed grappling with and shoving away with one hand aggressively — were known to him.

“Unfortunately, there are antagonists who target you based on your experiences as a has-been footballer. This individual is a serial harasser — and he chose to repeat his behaviour through vile and obscene slurs, again, last night,” he told The Herald Sun.

It was reported the man Carey confronted had been allegedly harassing him for more than half a year and was booted out of the same venue on Oaks Day last November for yelling at Carey.

“The guy in the backpack kept on coming back at Carey, trying to inflame the situation more and more. It just went on and on,” a witness told The Herald Sun.

Carey, known as “The King” or “Duck”, played 272 AFL Games and led the Kangaroos to flags in 1996 and 1999.

He was a seven time All-Australian and was named captain of that team four times.

The 54-year-old, who was named North’s captain in their team of the century, has been plagued by off-field issues since he finished his career at Adelaide in 2004.
