Snoop Dogg meets with Collingwood stars and shows off footy skills ahead of AFL grand final performance
American rapper Snoop Dogg has touched down at the MCG and was keen to get the footy in hand after joining a pair of Collingwood superstars on the hallowed turf.
The 53-year-old rapper landed in Melbourne on Monday ahead of his pre-game grand final performance this weekend and was keen to check out the venue where Pie brothers Josh and Nick Daicos were filming a photo shoot.
After chatting with the pair and receiving a few pointers, Dogg showed he is more than just a skilled lyricist, snapping a goal from the boundary, prompting loud celebrations from his entourage.
He then spoke with the pair beneath the stadium and signed autographs before departing with a ball in hand.
Dogg’s performance is expected to be one of the biggest in AFL history, with the rapper sporting several worldwide smash hits, including Gin and Juice and Drop It Like It’s Hot, while he will be supported by a plethora of local artists.
Tash Sultana will be part of Dogg’s band, while six-time ARIA winner and proud Yolngu artist Baker-Boy will perform at his second grand final after being the headline act for the 2021 decider in Perth.
Vera Blue will perform the national anthem while Mike Brady will return to belt out his classic footy anthem Up There Cazaly.
The AFL had come under fire for enlisting Snoop, whose lyrics have been labelled misogynistic and homophobic, while he was also called out for making homophobic comments on a podcast in August.
However, CEO Andrew Dillon said he expects Snoop’s performance to be one of the most iconic in history.
“The grand final entertainment will add to what will be an amazing spectacle ... it will be at a level that we haven’t seen for a long time, he’ll do a great job,” he said.
“Snoop Dogg is a pioneer, a performer, and a true entertainer. He’s played to packed stadiums around the world — but we think 100,000 fans at the MCG might just be his most iconic crowd yet.”
